Understanding car imports to Algeria

The rules keep shifting and the information in circulation often contradicts itself. Here is what we have verified, with our reservations where we have them.

The questions we are asked

Can you import a car to Algeria?
Yes, through two main routes: the change of residence (CCR) for an Algerian abroad returning for good, and the “under 3 years” scheme for a resident private individual, once every three years. In both cases: petrol, hybrid or electric only, and payment out of your own foreign currency.
Which vehicles are eligible for import to Algeria?
Petrol, hybrid or electric only — diesel is excluded for private individuals. On top of that come an age limit specific to each scheme (under 5 years for the CCR, under 3 years for a resident) and, for duty-free schemes such as the CCR, a 1,800 cc cap.
What is the CCR for a vehicle?
The change of residence lets an Algerian abroad who is returning for good import a vehicle free of duties, capped at 8 or 10 million dinars. Key conditions: consular registration, at least three years of continuous residence, never having used it before — and since 2026, the vehicle can be new or under five years old.
What is the total cost of a car import to Algeria?
The total cost adds up the vehicle, the sea freight, the customs duties and taxes — heavily reduced depending on your scheme: a capped exemption under the CCR, a 50 to 80% reduction for a resident — then the Algerian formalities (new vehicle tax, approval, registration). Our catalogue shows that total landed in Algeria, broken down line by line.

Information verified on 14 August 2026. If you are unsure about your situation, have it confirmed by an approved customs broker.
